Today I did my fitness assessment. As I suspected, I gained some weight (about 10 lbs from my last weigh-in) and some fat (1% from my most recent test). The trainer couldn’t measure the fat on my thigh because my quads are so huge. That was nice.

I was pleasantly surprised at my muscular endurance score. I did 40 push ups before losing form.

I don’t fully understand the cardio endurance test. I was supposed to keep a specific rate on the bicycle while the monitor measured my heart rate. Then the computer changed the resistance on the bike. It worked in 3-minute cycles. The computer told me I was done, but I felt like I could have gone longer. Then my report said my cardio needs improvement. I don’t disagree, but I also don’t understand why.

Improving cardio will help the other area that needs help – my fat percentage. I also talked to the trainer about weight lifting for burning day instead of weight lifting to bulk up.

My BP and heart rate (which aren’t bad but could be better) should improve in tandem with my cardio endeavors.

All that leaves is back flex. My plan is to do more yoga and lyra, but I’m not sure what I can afford this month since I need to make some repairs to my car. Yoga is free at UWF, but lyra (which is just so much fun) is off-site and carries a small fee.

Today was rest day, so I don’t have anything to report on that front. I ended up skipping fencing because I didn’t feel prepared for my real job tomorrow, so there’s nothing new there either. We’ll see what tomorrow has in store for me.

Welcome to the New Year!

I’m already sick. No joke.

I made it to a few Krav classes before our break for the holidays. Nik and I did some traveling, so most of our exercise consisted of walking around, but we did do a little fencing and spear throwing. We also spent a lot of time sitting in the car and eating rich foods. For the most part, there’s nothing to report here.

I didn’t feel too hot on New Year’s Day. I assumed that was a side effect from treating my body like an amusement park, but I stayed inside and chilled out nonetheless. On the second, Nik and I made it home from our vacation, and I felt really lousy, but there was a bad storm, so instead of going to the Minute Clinic, I took some cough syrup and slept for 10 hours. This plan didn’t help.

I had to miss my first day back at work, which isn’t nearly as much fun as it sounds. I’m on antibiotics (again) because the doctor thinks this is a secondary infection from the last illness I had. I swear, as soon as it felt like I was getting better (I had a cough long after I stopped the last course of antibiotics), I got worse. This can stop any time now.

Fencing starts up again this week, if I’m not mistaken. It would be wise of me to sit out tonight, but I won’t like it. My yogi moved, and I’m not sure if taking the employee class is best for my schedule, so I’m going to look into attending classes at a studio in town that my friend recommends. We have a Krav seminar coming up this month, and I’m going to help with that. We’ll have regular classes again after that. I’m glad we aren’t having class before the seminar – I’m hoping I’ll get better before it’s time to get back to work.

So I can’t work out, but I can manage my diet, so that’s what I’m doing for now. I’m using MyFitnessPal again, and I’m strongly considering getting a FitBit with my Christmas money.

Other than that, there really isn’t much to report.

My body has been trying to get sick for a couple of weeks now. Fortunately I made it through Magna Faire. I got to fence, and I did well enough that people were coming by and complimenting me, but I didn’t feel like I was fencing my fight. I assumed it was because I haven’t been practicing as much since I got hurt (remember that I’ve been to maybe two practices and Serfo since the shoulder sprain).

On Monday Krav was rained out. The weather was bad enough that we didn’t want our students out driving around. I welcomed the reprieve.

Tuesday was my last day of yoga, my first aid final, and my psych final. Toga was restful, and I aced my finals. Yay!

Apparently that took everything I had out of me because my body finally decided to be sick on Wednesday. I visited the MInute Clinic to make sure it wasn’t strep and was diagnosed with a cold. I’m taking some low dose steroids to deal with the symptoms. Now I’m full of energy but also not really up for doing anything. Of course, since I missed work Wednesday, I didn’t go to Krav. I probably will not go to fencing tonight.

This is frustrating because I want to get out and do stuff, but I also want to rest up and heal well so that I can enjoy my winter break. I have to keep reminding myself that there will be fencing practice and Krav, even though the school will be closed.

I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired (and hurt).

Monday night when I was getting ready for Krav, I felt really warm and looked flushed. I took my temperature and saw that I had a fever. I called Kita, told her what was up, and we agreed I should rest, so I settled in on the couch with my cat, some water, and a couple ibuprofen. I did some homework and took a nap. Apparently that did the trick because I was back at work the next day. It stinks that I missed a practice night, but I guess my body needed it.

Tuesday was wild. After working a normal day, I enjoyed yoga class. Then I went to my night class, and from there I went straight to Krav for my P3 test. I felt pretty good walking into it.

I felt FREAKING AWESOME walking out of it. I had to correct some things here and there, and I always have room for improvement (plus I got punched in the face – I don’t like this new tradition), but I think I passed. We get our results tonight. I’ll let you know when I remember to update.

If I don’t update, it’s because I’m frantically getting ready for Magna Faire this weekend. Nik and I are taking some of our fencing students up to Birmingham with us. They are so stoked – I hope it’s contagious.

I typed a post (painstakingly slowly) on Monday with a lot more detail and then lost it. I’m not a happy camper, so this will be a little terse. 

Saturday was a good workout/fencing day. I lifted some weights with Nik, and then I practiced long sword with Nik and Nikita.

Sunday instead of fencing, I practiced Krav with Gaby and Kita. I did a high forward roll poorly (after doing it mostly right) and crunched my shoulder. I iced it, dealt with it, soaked it… realized I needed to go to the ER. The shoulder isn’t broken, but it is quite painful. I have to wear a sling, and no fighting for at least a week.

I stayed home from work on Monday and slept weird tramadol dreams all morning. I felt better in the evening and visited Krav to drop off the pads and help call out activities.

I was back at work on Tuesday, and I explained my situation to my yogi. She came up with some yoga that I could do, and when I couldn’t do something, I visualized myself doing it and focused on my breathing instead.

Tonight I’ll go watch Krav some more. This has been a nice exercise in teaching using verbalization since I can’t demonstrate anything.

I see the ortho on Monday. I’m going to ask for a fast (if temporary) situation so that I can possibly still fence at SERFO. At the very least, I’d like to do rapier and dussack left-handed. I really really want to do long sword though. Really. Keep your fingers crossed.

At any rate, #fightingeverydamnday is on hold. In the meantime, though, I can read, watch films, and visualize… and be jealous as Nik continues with #fencingeverydamnday

On Tuesday, I went to yoga after work and hit the pool after class. I ended up swimming only 15 minutes, though, because I was worried about bleeding hair color all over the pool. Few things are more embarrassing than making your workout space look like a scene from Jaws. Nik has begun his quest to fence every day, so that’s what he was up to while I was at class and at the pool.

Wednesday night was Krav night. We did more P1 review. During P3 class, I asked some questions I had about kicks. I’ll be meeting up with The Ladies to work on groundwork over the weekend.

Last night after work I met Nik and some of the UWF fencers at the gym, and I worked primarily on long sword. I’m picking it up fairly quickly – I’m far from the best, but I’m doing good things. After fencing, Nik and I took a quick run because I still needed some cardio. My mile is down to 9 minutes. Last night was Nik’s Day 5 of #fencingeverydamnday.

Today after work I’m going to use the elliptical to get my heart rate up, come home, rest (probably have a snack), and head to UWF fencing practice. Tonight will be my Day 3 of #fightingeverydamnday.

If it sounds like a lot of activity, it is. Nik is training for a big tournament, and I’m training for that tournament while simultaneously preparing myself for CIC 1.

In the midst of all of this, I lost a pound and a half last week. I’m down 5 lbs total since I started tracking. I also recommended that Nik start tracking to make sure he’s getting enough calories for his amount of activity.

My weekend went as I expected, and it was awesome. I got to do some fencing, and I spent ample time with my far-away fencing friends.

On Monday I was back to work at Krav. I’m settling into my new instructor role. I did warm-ups with the advanced students and fine tuned some skills for some brand new students with special needs. It was super rewarding. After that, the other P3s and I stayed to work on getting out of headlocks on the ground.

Yesterday I went to yoga, and I had planned to run at the gym (I didn’t need to go to my night class), but I had a lot of work at home that needed to be addressed, so I did that instead. Now I’m simultaneously fatigued from staying up working and antsy from not getting much physical activity in yesterday.

Krav tonight should be fun.

I meant to post sooner, but honestly, waiting only four days instead of a whole week or more is progress, and that’s really what this blog is all about.

On Monday I started tracking my food again. So far things are going well on that front. Fortunately I’ve been able to make very minor changes – primarily, I’m being mindful of what I’m eating. I’ll let you know how that pans out in a few weeks.

I’m not entirely sure how to measure progress since my goal here isn’t necessarily to lose weight or inches (though it would be nice to have a nicer fit in some of my dress pants). I’m trying to improve performance in a field that i find hard to measure. In running or lifting, you can measure speed, reps, or weight. With fighting, it’s a little more subjective. I figure the more “good days” I have training, the better I’m performing.

Anyway, Monday was the first day I really got to teach in Krav. It was a little bit nerve wracking, but your first day teaching always is. It helps that I’m learning how to teach this skill in a friendly environment with people I know. I expressed to Kita that I’m still learning which types of errors to look for. For example when I teach fencing, I know that new fencers tend to roll the ankle when they lunge, so I pay special attention to their feet when they learn this skill. I’m working on figuring out some “common errors” for Krav. More importantly, I’m working on finding ways to make warm-ups dynamic and appropriate for the exercises we’re about to do. This is all awesome and exciting; the bad news is that I don’t really get to work out on class nights anymore.

Tuesday was a yoga night, but I need to work on cardio, so I hit the pool after my night class. I was on the swim team in high school. That was a long time ago, and I wasn’t very good to begin with, but I really enjoy swimming. I managed to keep at it for half an hour – not too shabby by my book!

Last night was another teacher night. I spend about an hour teaching P1s, and then after they leave, I have about a half an hour to work on my own P3 training. We’re working on finding some days to meet and train outside of class.

Scheduling Krav practice time for the next two months will be difficult partially because of my schedule and partially because I have a HEMA event coming up soon, and I really want to participate in longsword. I want to learn enough that I won’t embarrass myself in front of the other fencers.

I don’t expect to update tonight, so I’ll tell you now that I plan to hit the gym after work and use their punching bag. If the gym is closed, I’ll come up with something else to do. If all else fails, I still have the Dreaded Exercise Bike at home.

Nik and I have made the decision to attend UWF fencing practice on Friday and then drive to Birmingham(ish) right after for a weekend SCA event. That drive should be fun. I’m looking forward to fencing with my friends on Saturday. There won’t be practice on Sunday.

I did not, in fact, push through and go to Krav, but that’s also the last class I’m skipping for a long time. Now I’m focusing on getting ready for civilian instructor certification level 1 (CIC1) in April, so I can’t afford to slack off. I’ll be moving into a more active teaching role in my own little Krav school (I feel like a Krav TA) before I head off.

I did go to yoga on Tuesday, and I made it back to Krav on Wednesday. The calf is still sore, but moving around and stretching helps.

Thursday was a rest day, and Friday I (finally) made it to UWF fencing practice. We had a special guest for that practice – Prissy got some teaching experience by warming us up with some yoga. I focused primarily on rapier during that practice, but the room was busy with rapier, dussack, and ringen.

Yesterday I went to the beach, took a walk, and did some sun salutations. The jellies were out, so I elected not to swim. Nik and I took a Poke-walk on the beach after lunch. 

Today, SCA fencing practice is cancelled. We lost one of our own last week, so all local SCA activities are cancelled, and we’re spending time with our loved ones.

I believe that’s all I’ve been up to this week. Looking forward, In addition to getting ready for CIC1, I have a big fencing event coming up in November, and I want to participate in as many tournaments as possible, so I need to tune up my dussack and long sword skills. November is a big month for me in general. I have somewhere to be (involving fencing) every single weekend that month. I’m excited, but I also expect to be exhausted.

I’m hoping that some of the adjustments I’m making to my diet and fitness levels for CIC1 will help me make it through that month. I’ve installed MyFitnessPal on my new phone, and I’m keeping track of what I’m putting in (again – I use this app in phases). I’m considering getting a fitness tracking device, but I’m not entirely sure which one I want. They’re pricey, so I want to make sure I get the right one!
