I did some research. The numbness I’m experiencing sounds like a pinched nerve. I don’t know if the pain is from repetitive use or if it’s related to the pinched nerve.

I’ve been dealing with this unpleasantness for years. It has been intermittent up to this point, but the static in my back is increasing in area as well as frequency. I’m going to try to see my GP about it, and I know what he’s going to tell me. I really don’t want to hear what he’s going to tell me.

I had an issue with my left shoulder a couple months ago. I rested it and took steroids for about a week and a half / two weeks. Despite wanting to do nothing but eat and fight for the first week of that ordeal, I came out the other side in good shape, and I was able to practice as long as I didn’t use that arm. I don’t know if not using that arm for half a month has anything to do with my forgetting I have an off-hand unless I have something in it.

I also don’t know if I have one bad shoulder or two. Do I have a pinched nerve on one side and a propensity for rotator cuff issues on both sides? Do I need to stop fencing for awhile? Do rehab? Have surgery? Get painful shots that will discolor my skin? None of these options sound like a good time, but I know I need to do something now if I want to keep fencing in the long term.

Today I got to do some actual fencing! I incorporated more lunges into my fight, but I still prefer fighting up close.

My mentor worked with me on hand shots and reading my opponent.

I’ll catch up on my lunges tomorrow. I’m bushed after rocking out all night and fencing all day (plus driving to Birmingham and back).

Days 14 & 15

I did 200 lunges this morning because I was too busy hanging out with Santa to do them last night, and I’ll be at a show in Birmingham tonight.

Starting in fourth and transitioning from there was a challenge. I really want to start in first. Always.

My shoulders are killing me. I got a massage from a massage therapy student yesterday. As soon as she touched me, she asked if I was an athlete. When she was working my shoulder (the right one is bothering me now), she guessed volleyball. I considered making her guess, but I assumed “fighting everyone I see” wouldn’t necessarily come to mind.

Day 12

I managed to do the day’s lunges without incident (unless you count the fact that I did tomorrow’s drill).

I feel like I really need to slow down to hit my target, and I’m not even close to fighting speed.

On a happier note, an hour of yoga before 100 lunges is way easier on my body than an hour of Krav Maga before 200 lunges

Days 10 & 11

Today I did an hour of Krav Maga and then came home to do 200 lunges.

Technically I reversed the days. I did 100 lunges in first. Then I went to do 100 lunges in fourth. It took me three tries to find fourth hand position.

I did third… No, that’s not right…
I did second… Nik spoke up and asked, “Fourth with your palm up?”

I reacted as only a sane, mature adult can and threw myself on the ground for a quick tantrum.

In addition to the 200 and false starts, I used tape to figure out the discrepancy in my lunge distance for different hand positions. Then when I did the drill, I was still inconsistent.

I guess you can’t do the same lunge twice. How’s that for a fencing proverb?

Days 8 & 9

I didn’t do lunges on Friday because I drove halfway across the state and drank tequila with my friend.

I didn’t do lunges on Saturday because I went to a metal show with another friend.

Today I drove halfway across the state and did twice as many lunges as penance for my hedonism. Tomorrow I’ll double up again and be all caught up.

The air conditioning in my house needs to be replaced. I’m drenched. I feel like I’ve thoroughly cleansed myself of alcohol and rock music.

Day 7

I just knocked out my 100 for the day and finished off the week.

Something is wrong with the air conditioner in my home, and I ate entirely too much this evening. If I can do 100 lunges on a full stomach in this kind of heat and humidity, I am unstoppable.

Hitting the road tomorrow. I intend to lunge while I’m gone and maybe take in a practice with my friends to the east.
