CIC 2 Day 3

Today we literally kicked off the morning. We practiced front kicks and defenses from straight kicks. I hadn’t practiced some of those defenses, and I fine tuned the ones I had done.

I led the warm-up after lunch. I skimped on cardio (no surprise) because it felt monotonous (I did get some feedback on how to add to it in a dynamic way). My game was a disaster (equipment didn’t do what I wanted it to), and I wasted some time trying to fix it. That being said, my group was warm, and they did have fun. I had good presence, voice, and body position.

We learned about the timelines after that. The best way to explain is to show you.

The horizontal timeline explains how much time the threat has to get to you, and the vertical timeline describes when you notice the threat. It’s a very dynamic way to approach Krav Maga, and having it explained visually really helped me.

After that, we broke into groups to practice teaching. Yesterday we were in three groups of three. Today we were in a group of four and a group of five. I was in the group of five. I ended up being the last person to teach (which is cool with me – I can learn a lot from hearing others’ feedback). Since the other group had already finished teaching, I got to do the first student-led whole group instruction!

I was a little nervous, but my classmates said it didn’t show. I met some stumbles and flubbed some words, but on the whole I had a good lesson. I got lots of high fives and genuine compliments.

I’m working on my homework now. I’ll be teaching a simple skill, and that can actually be more challenging than teaching a multi-step defense. I’ll be asking some questions before class tomorrow.

CIC 2 Day 2

Today was a bit more active than yesterday. We worked on break falls and rolls in the morning and practiced teaching in the afternoon. Every student had a chance to teach a lesson to a small group today, and we planned a new lesson for tomorrow (for homework).

I haven’t led the class in a warm-up yet, but I’ve had one prepared for a couple days. I know I’ll get a turn, so I’m in no rush.

My teaching today felt good. I actually messed up the technique a little bit and added something that shouldn’t have been there, bit I’d rather add a step than leave out something important.

I slept like a log last night, and I expect the same tonight.

CIC 2 Day 1

Today I woke up before my alarm, even though I didn’t feel like I slept well last night (according to the FitBit, I got over 6 hours).

Day 1 started at 9 this morning. I finally met Megan, our instructor for CIC, in person. She’s a great leader, and I love her teaching philosophy. We all got to know each other and talked about our expectations. Then one of my classmates led us in a warm up. We practiced some basics and discussed how to teach them until lunchtime. After an hour lunch break, we learned about pedagogy. Our homework for tonight is to write a lesson plan for a basic skill.

We were supposed to work out some more, but we ran out of time because we had a women’s self defense seminar this evening. We all helped and watched Megan teach. After a quick de-briefing, we were dismissed.

I’m feeling pretty good. I expect tomorrow will be more active. I didn’t reach my step goal today. My back is really sore, and I’m not sure why. I used Michael’s foam roller before i finished my homework, and my treat for finishing my homework was a soak in the bathtub.

I’m ready for tomorrow.

On Thursday I rested.

Friday after work I tried out my new sneakers on the outdoor track. The results weren’t promising, and I was super apprehensive about the run. I went to fencing practice that night and went over some basic I.33 with the class. I’ve also been helping CC find her fight and become more aggressive (because of her stature, she really needs to get in close and fast if she wants to win). I’m seeing some progress and am proud of her.

On Saturday I did the McGuire’s 5K with my friends from Krav. Michael and I ran together (and walked a few stretches). The ship in my identification bib didn’t work, so I don’t know my exact time. I know I crossed the finish line at 9:50. The starting gun went off at 9, but it took us some time to get to the start line. Unfortunately I didn’t think to look at my phone when we started, so suffice to say my 5K took less than 50 minutes. I’m okay with that. I spent the rest of the day hanging out with my friends, enjoying adult beverages, and watching the bands play. That was my last hurrah until CIC. No sweets, fast food, or alcohol until I get back.

Sunday I was super miserable and sunburned because I forgot to wear sunscreen (at least I wasn’t hungover). I spent my time getting ready for the week ahead and working on a project for my job. Nik took me for a Poke-walk at the nature trail around dusk so that I wouldn’t be further harmed by the daystar.

Last night was Krav night. Michael lost his voice, so Kita taught with me. We had only two students this time, so we each took one and went over some skills; then we switched to do some review. That’s one hell of a student/teacher ratio!

I intend to visit the gym after work today. I like the camaraderie of going with Nik, but I also know that it’s faster if I go by myself (he likes to workout for a couple hours at a time). I’m still deciding what I want to do.

Tomorrow will be one month to the day before CIC starts. To prepare, I’m going to do what I always do and fight (or study) for 30 days.

I rested up and felt a bit better for the weekend.

First i assisted in a Krav seminar. The official instructors did the instructing, and I and some of my cohorts worked the room, helping people adjust form and answering questions. I committed to teaching P1 and P2 with my CIC partner. We start next week. I’m stoked and nervous – just like when I teach English.

After that I hit the road. Nik and I visited our friends in Castlemere/Jacksonville for fencing practice (shout out to Zhao for following my adventures!). I fenced a few rounds and made some new friends. I tried not to over-exert myself and had a great afternoon. 

When we got back to Pensacola, we rested a bit and then went to UWF practice. I did much more fencing (but still took breaks). I’m still standing, so I feel pretty good and think I may finally be over this cold.

Tonight after work Nik and I are hitting the gym. I’m not sure what I’m going to try to do (light weightlifting? incorporating running? finally trying the rock wall?), but I’m definitely ready to get back to being active.

On Saturday I spent more time in the chair at the salon than I intended to, so I didn’t exercise. In fact, I stayed up binge watching Stranger Things and eating ice cream and doing otherwise very un-fit things. It was awesome.

Sunday was SCA rapier practice, and Nik and I got up and went dutifully even though we probably didn’t get enough sleep. We mixed it up: long sword, rapier, and dussack all made an appearance.

Tonight is Krav night. We’ll be doing more review in the P1 and P2 classes, and I’m working on making sure I know the names for all the P3 techniques.

I meant to post sooner, but honestly, waiting only four days instead of a whole week or more is progress, and that’s really what this blog is all about.

On Monday I started tracking my food again. So far things are going well on that front. Fortunately I’ve been able to make very minor changes – primarily, I’m being mindful of what I’m eating. I’ll let you know how that pans out in a few weeks.

I’m not entirely sure how to measure progress since my goal here isn’t necessarily to lose weight or inches (though it would be nice to have a nicer fit in some of my dress pants). I’m trying to improve performance in a field that i find hard to measure. In running or lifting, you can measure speed, reps, or weight. With fighting, it’s a little more subjective. I figure the more “good days” I have training, the better I’m performing.

Anyway, Monday was the first day I really got to teach in Krav. It was a little bit nerve wracking, but your first day teaching always is. It helps that I’m learning how to teach this skill in a friendly environment with people I know. I expressed to Kita that I’m still learning which types of errors to look for. For example when I teach fencing, I know that new fencers tend to roll the ankle when they lunge, so I pay special attention to their feet when they learn this skill. I’m working on figuring out some “common errors” for Krav. More importantly, I’m working on finding ways to make warm-ups dynamic and appropriate for the exercises we’re about to do. This is all awesome and exciting; the bad news is that I don’t really get to work out on class nights anymore.

Tuesday was a yoga night, but I need to work on cardio, so I hit the pool after my night class. I was on the swim team in high school. That was a long time ago, and I wasn’t very good to begin with, but I really enjoy swimming. I managed to keep at it for half an hour – not too shabby by my book!

Last night was another teacher night. I spend about an hour teaching P1s, and then after they leave, I have about a half an hour to work on my own P3 training. We’re working on finding some days to meet and train outside of class.

Scheduling Krav practice time for the next two months will be difficult partially because of my schedule and partially because I have a HEMA event coming up soon, and I really want to participate in longsword. I want to learn enough that I won’t embarrass myself in front of the other fencers.

I don’t expect to update tonight, so I’ll tell you now that I plan to hit the gym after work and use their punching bag. If the gym is closed, I’ll come up with something else to do. If all else fails, I still have the Dreaded Exercise Bike at home.

Nik and I have made the decision to attend UWF fencing practice on Friday and then drive to Birmingham(ish) right after for a weekend SCA event. That drive should be fun. I’m looking forward to fencing with my friends on Saturday. There won’t be practice on Sunday.

Last Wednesday I went to Krav and helped students in my more active teaching role. I feel completely out of my element.

On Friday I got to go to UWF fencing practice, and I actually got to DO some fencing as well as teaching.

Saturday involved some beach yoga and a walk to the pier and back. I’d say I s wam, but I mostly just floated around.

On Sunday I resumed SCA fencing practice. Introducing a new student to rapier was a welcome break from the heat. One disadvantage to training indoors is you forget how to train outdoors. I emphasize lots of breaks and lots of hydration.

Yesterday, however, I decided i needed a break. I’ve been feeling kind of down lately, and I wasn’t up to any sort of challenge. I stayed home and worked on an art project instead. Yoga is cancelled tonight, which is kind of a bummer, but I’m looking forward to actually being in my house for some time before class. Tomorrow, though, I’m getting back into the groove!

Last night I went to Krav. I missed one class, but it felt like I’d been out for weeks.

Last night we did lots of kicking. First we went over some P2 kicks with students learning that material. I like getting to go over things I’ve already learned with the new class because I can show them how to avoid mistakes I’ve made, and it improves my ability to do the skill.

After that, Kita caught me up on some things that I missed after Eddie showed us how to block forward kicks (P3 techniques).

On Sunday night, I finally went to an aerial yoga class. I absolutely loved it. We used aerial cloud (the silk is in a U shape), which I found much more accessible than straight up and down silks. I really liked the way that suspension took pressure off my spine… plus we learned some neat tricks. I’d like to practice aerial cloud again – maybe montly – but it all depends on how busy I am with school this semester.

Day 26

Today I did 100 lunges.

More importantly, I went to UWF fencing practice and fenced almost everyone there. I worked with some young men who missed a lot of practice time and then had some fun with the usual group.

I have a fencer with something weird going on. I think it’s biomechanical. It seems like no matter how her sword is balanced or how heavy her sword is, there’s a weakness in her wrists. Her attacks are super wide. If you’ve seen anything like this, please hit me up. I’m at a loss here.

Yesterday I went to SCA practice in Birmingham. I got to fence with people I don’t see a lot.

After practice, Nik and I talked about ways to offer advice to someone who has been doing this longer than you have without being condescending. Everyone received us well, but it’s hard to offer help if you’re worried you’ll come across as a jerk. Again, if you have any insight, please send it my way. I love fencing, and I don’t want to piss anyone off or chase anyone away.
