I had a fantastic weekend!

On Friday, I went to a local elementary school with my local SCA group and showed kids some rapier fighting and rapier gear. We demoed for seven classes, and each one was a little different and liked different things.

After that i hustled across the street to the high school, where I helped my Krav school’s Relay for Life team. We put on a demonstration, and I also walked and ran some laps.

The rest of the weekend I hung out with my mom – no fighting. I had Nik take over at the park for me on Sunday. I’m glad to be back doing what I love.

Testing day is right around the corner! Last night at Krav, we did a dry run of the test. I’m confident that I will pass. I didn’t get many reminders this time through.

I need to modify my forearm guards so that I can wear them with my gloves. I’ll be doing that tonight. Wednesday is the last practice class before the test on Saturday. I’m ready. I’m covered in bruises, but I’m ready.

I’m also super proud of my sparring partner. She placed in a 10K over the weekend. I don’t run if I can avoid it, so I’m awed that she got up and ran 6 miles in the cold and NAILED IT.

Krav was rewarding but brutal today. I think my attempts to improve my running have only fatigued me and tightened my legs up so far. In addition to fighting and yoga, I spent some time on the elliptical twice last week. I guess I need to slow down or do something else for cardio. I’m also going to add more rigorous stretching no matter what I do. I always stretch before activity. Apparently I’m not doing enough.

As always, if anyone out there knows good stretches for the quadriceps, I’m open to suggestions. My calves could probably use some love too.

I had an amazing night at Krav. My instructors were talking about setting tangible goals for us, so we did an exercise that works to prepare us for certification (not instructorship). We trained for an hour straight. No breaks. If we needed to stretch or drink water, we did it while we were moving. It was pretty intense. I hated the running, so I guess that means I need to do more of it.

I don’t have any specific goals for this class. I signed up because it sounded cool, and it’s affected me in ways I never could have imagined. I’m totally cool with seeing where the road takes me. It’s a low-pressure environment that somehow still pushes me and challenges me. Unlike other activities I’ve tried, it helps my fencing instead of hurting it.

It was just a really good night, folks. It’s tub time.
