Since my last post ran long talking about my beach adventure, I figured I’d put my real update here.

On Friday night i went to UWF fencing practice. We mostly sparred since Fridays are short days. I’m fencing with both hands now, but I’ve been using a lighter (and shorter) sword in my right hand more often than not. The finger is still stiff, and I’m still doing my stretches and exercises four times each day, but I am seeing progress.

On Saturday I went back to the beach. Because of the beach restoration efforts, my walk to the pier was cut short, and I didn’t really have a good space for beach yoga. I did get to pick up some neat shells, and I saw a bunch of seagulls chilling out in the hard hat area because there weren’t a bunch of people in their way. That was pretty cool. I did get back in the water, and I swam around for a good portion of the day. After that, I borrowed Nik’s phone and played Pokemon Go a little bit on the island. The poke-stops were a reasonable distance apart, and I managed to catch some pretty cool creatures.

I did not attempt to have fencing practice on Sunday because the forecast was so bad, and I also really needed to do some sewing. I finished NIk’s shirt in its entirety and the base of his pants. His doublet is still mocking me. I will still be naked for the ceremony. Fortunately we’re taking a little trip to see the lady making his court garb, so I’ll have plenty of time to work plus some skilled hands I can borrow if I get stuck.

Last night I went to Krav. There were new people, so I was helping one of them – a young man in his teens. He was pretty chill, but he admitted that he shouldn’t have eaten so close to class and had to have a little break at one point. I told him there was no shame in that – I fart loudly in class all the time. It’s just life. Anyway, he recovered, and I think he made some progress and had a good time. After the new students left, the P3 students (man, that’s exciting to say) worked on stationary kicks. I’m actually fairly good at these, so while I drilled this skill a lot last night, I didn’t have the frustration of constantly correcting.

On Monday and Wednesday we reviewed more P1 stuff. I have a chance to practice some more tonight, but I think I’m going to pass and get some rest today. Never underestimate the power of taking it easy sometimes. It’s essential for training.

On Tuesday I was the only one at yoga, so the instructor made up some flow as we went. It was a lot of fun, and even though it was challenging, it was still accessible. I walked out of class feeling like I’d made some big improvements, and I have some tips for improving my flexibility at home. My hamstrings are usually very tight, so these stretches should help me across the board in my activities.

On Wednesday, I helped the P1 group. I realized I’d forgotten a lot of terminology, so I was glad I had the practice.

I got to go to UWF fencing on Friday night. I worked with some new fencers and did some bouts with Nik and one of our older students.

Today I went to the park for SCA practice. Instead of rapier, I did a lot of cut and thrust (specifically MS I.33). That’s something else I haven’t been studying as well as I should! Nik and I worked with someone who has been doing rapier and armored combat for awhile but is new to CT. He’s a lefty and primarily and armored fighter, so I learned a lot from him.

I’m in kind of a slump, and I don’t really feel like going to practice, but doing CT seemed to help me a little bit. I love fencing, so this is really frustrating for me.

Does anyone else deal with occasionally having trouble gearing up to participate in your hobbies?

Day 32 (and more)

On Friday I went to UWF practice. I did 100 lunges and the around the clock drill. I did some sparring, but I ended up gearing down early because I misunderstood when we were supposed to leave.

On Saturday morning, I woke up bright & early and took my P1 test for Krav. I passed! I didn’t throw up or embarrass myself, so I think I get a gold star. I feel super strong and empowered.

Today I participated in the Shire Rapier Championship at our mini-event Light the Fires. I lost two bouts, but they were good losses to good opponents. Every person I fenced was a challenge in some way or another. I learned a hard lesson – when you start to drop your dagger, just drop it. Don’t juggle when you’re supposed to be fencing.

Dragon-mom came out with some friends to see me fence. They missed the tournament, so Nik and I did a few passes for them. Her friends were excited to finally see my fencing, and she commented on how much my fight has changed in such a short period of time.

This weekend was amazing.

Tonight in Krav we kicked off the night with zombie drills: intense! After that we had a chance to ask questions and re-cover any skills we wanted. I’m ready for the test on Saturday.

The really interesting part of my night was when I came home.

Since class was challenging and I wanted to keep my body happy and healthy for my test, I came home and ran a nice hot bath with some home made bath salts my mom gave me for my birthday (the Epsom salts and nice scents kind, not the Florida Man kind). I settled in to relax my shoulders, ears under water, and closed my eyes.

I was startled when I heard a thud next to my head. My cat had jumped onto the edge of the tub and was checking out my knees (they were out because my shoulders were in, and my tub is small). I stayed very still because I didn’t want to risk startling her and making her fall in, but she left after a moment or two.. She came and went a few times, and I grew more comfortable with her presence. I can understand why a cat would be fascinated with bathing.

So for what turned out to be her final visit, she sat down, purring loudly. Then she lay down like a little sphinx. Then she went full-on catloaf. The end of her tail was even hanging in the water. We sat like that, she loafed on the edge and I reclined in the water, for several minutes. She made unwavering eye contact and purred the whole time. It was without a doubt the most humorous/awkward bath I’ve ever had; I’m glad it wasn’t the scratchiest!

Testing day is right around the corner! Last night at Krav, we did a dry run of the test. I’m confident that I will pass. I didn’t get many reminders this time through.

I need to modify my forearm guards so that I can wear them with my gloves. I’ll be doing that tonight. Wednesday is the last practice class before the test on Saturday. I’m ready. I’m covered in bruises, but I’m ready.

I’m also super proud of my sparring partner. She placed in a 10K over the weekend. I don’t run if I can avoid it, so I’m awed that she got up and ran 6 miles in the cold and NAILED IT.

Day 30

I went to SCA fencing practice on Sunday. I probably could have geared up, but I played it safe instead and did 100 lunges, some footwork, and the around the clock drill. The realization that my chest protectors would line up perfectly with my bruises helped me reach the decision to sit it out one more day.

I had the chance to go to UWF fencing on Monday, but Nik and I were both too pooped to go, so we declared Monday a rest day. I’ll be back at Krav tomorrow. I’m looking forward to yoga tonight.

My P1 test is right around the corner. I’m excited, but the nervousness hasn’t really kicked in yet.

Krav last night was spectacular. My favorite part was when one of the instructors pointed out to us that we’ve gotten to the point in our training where other people are watching us to see what to do.

I got punched in the face by a teenaged girl. I don’t recommend it. Her form was excellent.

I also learned an important lesson about gear. It is unwise to wear an underwire sport bra when you practice the “educational stop.” I have a tremendous bruise on my sternum from last night, and we only worked on that skill for about a minute! I’m considering doing a no-contact fencing practice tomorrow if I’m still tender. You may hear about lots of drills and lunges in my next entry.

Other than that, things are going well. I feel like I’m prepared for the P1 test as a student and as a training partner.

Tonight was another all-out Krav practice. I still don’t do so well with what I refer to as “changing planes.” Basically, if my head is alternating between being above and below my heart (like breaking out of a headlock) or if I’m getting up and down a lot (like doing burpees), I tend to have issues with my blood pressure. I’m not passing out, but I do see the static at the edges of my vision. I actually stopped once, but usually I try to fight through. I figure if I’m ever being attacked for real, my assailant won’t hold off on me if I get heady.

Right now I know I need to work on stopping an attack with a punch. My instinct is to block that outside strike, but I really don’t need to. I also need to review my forward kicks to make them more like a knee with a snap (if you do Krav, that makes sense, if you don’t, well… I’m not sure how to clarify).

At any rate, I feel awesome after class, and I’ve dropped 5 lbs since the beginning of the year. I’m assuming I was holding some water weight at that first weigh-in. I haven’t been leaning out hard enough to drop that much weight in 10 days. More importantly, though, I feel strong (except when I’m in armor, but that’s another story!).

Monday and Wednesday were good training days in Krav. It looks like we’ll be testing in January.

It looks like I’ll have to make a choice: testing falls on an SCA event day. There will be another chance in February, but I have easily twice as many events in February as I do in January.

At any rate, I’ll need to train this month so that I don’t forget the material before the test. Don’t worry. I won’t neglect my fencing.
