I did not make it to the gym on Thursday or Friday. Nik and I have had trouble getting moving in the mornings, and I did homework on Thursday when I could have been working out. No regrets on the homework, but we need to go to bed earlier or something.

On Friday I helped a friend with an outdoor project that involved setting up a medieval tent, cleaning it, and putting it away. That involved walking, lifting, and scrubbing, and it was outdoors. I had a great time being productive and hanging out with my friends. My fitbit didn’t pick any of it up.

On Saturday and Sunday, I went to the beach. I took lots of walks on Saturday. When I went Sunday with friends, we took walks, we played with dussacks, and I actually went for a little swim.

Today I’m back to tracking calories. I keep getting off track because I keep eating things that don’t have clear labels (like home made food – not bad), or I eat away from home (often fast food – kinda bad). My barcode scanner is working again, so that will encourage me.

Since Nik and I didn’t get up in time to lift this morning, I tried working out at home instead. I took a photo of this themed workout at the PSC gym over a year ago. I did Level 1.

My purpose was twofold. I needed to work out, and I wanted to see if this could work as a Krav warm up (with some adjustments, yes).

Today is the first time I’ve felt fat since I’ve put on the weight. Even though my clothes got a little tight during winter break, I never felt like this. When I was jumping around, my clothes were shifting, and I saw a lot of belly. That happens, but I also felt like the extra weight was hindering me. I felt really slow, and I don’t have much flexibility. When I lift weights, I don’t feel like this. I don’t know if this means I’m being challenged and should do more exercises like this or what. I assume there will be more days that I don’t wake up in time for gym time before Nik has to work, so I’ll have time to try more workouts.

Tonight is Krav. If there’s an uneven or small number of people, I may join the class, and if all 4 instructors in training are there, we can split up: some teach and some train. We’ll see. I ate something that didn’t agree with me, but I’m feeling better since then and should be okay by tonight.

Last night Nik and I went to the gym and climbed the rock wall. I made it about halfway up, got stuck, got nervous, and bailed out. Then I watched him climb to the top. I tried one more time and made it almost to the top (four panels shy) before I got stuck and bailed (I didn’t really give myself time to be scared the second time). I had a really good time, and I think I climbed pretty high, even though I didn’t ring the bell. We’re going to try that again for sure!

After the rock wall, we did some weight lifting. Then we met up with Marco and Tiny NIck! for some fencing. We planned to fence 8-9, maybe 9:15. We closed the gym at 10. I’d say that was a good practice.

We did some sword and dagger work and made the boys practice sword and dagger against case (or brace – two swords). We also played with the dussacks. I showed some “hand sniping” techniques as well.

Tonight will be my and Michael’s second day of teaching Krav unassisted. I came up with my lesson plan yesterday and feel pretty good about it.

I’m back, baby!

I’m finally out of the sling, and I even got to fight!

Let’s rewind. I didn’t see much point in updating during my recovery. Mostly my life consisted of being uncomfortable in the sling, occasionally taking it off and doing light stretching, and icing it regularly. I had a few opportunities to go watch other people fence, which wasn’t quite as terrible as it could have been. I enjoyed little victories like being able to wash my own hair.

Then came Thursday. I wore my sling religiously, even the entire ride up to Atlanta. I was so very careful that I felt comfortable leaving the sling off all day on Friday. I attended a discussion about destreza that morning and then a practical lesson that night. To play things safe, I went through the drills left handed and avoided doing ringen afterward. I didn’t even do both halves of the class, partially because I wanted to keep some energy in reserve and partially because my friends had arrived in town.

On Saturday, I fenced for the first time since the injury. I rigged together a shoulder guard and fought in my pool in the women’s long sword competition. I met my goal of not embarrassing myself.

After that, I competed in the dussack tournament. I fought left handed and wore extra padding but didn’t deal with any hard blows to that side. Unfortunately I did smash my fingers and need to sit out the rest of the day, so I missed the first blood rapier tournament.

On Sunday I elected not to participate in the open long sword tournament, and based on some of the fighting I saw, I made the right call. I was able to compete in the conventional long sword tournament, and I made it out of my pools but washed out in elims (fencing right handed since the tournament was thrust only).

I went back to Krav on Monday without the sling. This time I got to participate since I need to catch up on my P3 skills. My Krav buddies marveled at my bruises, and I worked out three weeks’ worth of pent up energy.

Now I’m experiencing a delayed event hangover, so I’ll take it easy tonight. I’m looking forward to Krav practice tomorrow. I’ll let you know when I get to test.

The ortho says I have a Level 1 sprain (so not too bad). I’m supposed to stay in the sling, keep icing it, and generally resting up. I’ve been abiding by those instructions pretty carefully.

I told him about SERFO and what I wanted to do. He said that if I really truly rest, I should be able to compete, BUT (and I can’t emphasize how big this but is), if I’m not feeling 100%, I could cause further injury. A hard fall or blow could cause an AC separation, which would require surgery.

If I were going to SERFO today, I’d do rapier but probably not dussack and definitely not long sword. We’ll see how I feel in two weeks. I’m going to talk to the people in charge of the tournament, evaluate my armor situation, and otherwise figure out what I’m going to do.

In the meantime, my life is super sedentary and boring. I’m getting frustrated, and I don’t have much of an outlet. I am still doing yoga, but class doesn’t meet next week or the week after, so I’ll have to do gentle movement stretching on my own. I’m thinking I need to go for a walk or something to get moving around without straining the shoulder any more.

Last weekend Nik and I took a bunch of our UWF fencing students to Gatalop. I couldn’t fight, of course, but I marshaled, and I had a great time watching our students have a great time. This weekend is Panhandle Skirmishes. I’m considering gearing up so that I can be on the field giving orders, but again, I’m not fighting. It may be better to leave my stuff at home to remove all temptation.

Krav was canceled on Monday since people in my class have kids to take trick or treating. We’re back at it today. I have no idea how class will go since Michael (the other “TA” as I call us) is also hurt – from doing the same move. He’s hurt way worse than I am, so I don’t know if he’ll come in or not. I know we’re mostly doing review, though, so class should be manageable.

I typed a post (painstakingly slowly) on Monday with a lot more detail and then lost it. I’m not a happy camper, so this will be a little terse.

Saturday was a good workout/fencing day. I lifted some weights with Nik, and then I practiced long sword with Nik and Nikita.

Sunday instead of fencing, I practiced Krav with Gaby and Kita. I did a high forward roll poorly (after doing it mostly right) and crunched my shoulder. I iced it, dealt with it, soaked it… realized I needed to go to the ER. The shoulder isn’t broken, but it is quite painful. I have to wear a sling, and no fighting for at least a week.

I stayed home from work on Monday and slept weird tramadol dreams all morning. I felt better in the evening and visited Krav to drop off the pads and help call out activities.

I was back at work on Tuesday, and I explained my situation to my yogi. She came up with some yoga that I could do, and when I couldn’t do something, I visualized myself doing it and focused on my breathing instead.

Tonight I’ll go watch Krav some more. This has been a nice exercise in teaching using verbalization since I can’t demonstrate anything.

I see the ortho on Monday. I’m going to ask for a fast (if temporary) situation so that I can possibly still fence at SERFO. At the very least, I’d like to do rapier and dussack left-handed. I really really want to do long sword though. Really. Keep your fingers crossed.

At any rate, #fightingeverydamnday is on hold. In the meantime, though, I can read, watch films, and visualize… and be jealous as Nik continues with #fencingeverydamnday

On Saturday I spent more time in the chair at the salon than I intended to, so I didn’t exercise. In fact, I stayed up binge watching Stranger Things and eating ice cream and doing otherwise very un-fit things. It was awesome.

Sunday was SCA rapier practice, and Nik and I got up and went dutifully even though we probably didn’t get enough sleep. We mixed it up: long sword, rapier, and dussack all made an appearance.

Tonight is Krav night. We’ll be doing more review in the P1 and P2 classes, and I’m working on making sure I know the names for all the P3 techniques.

I did not, in fact, push through and go to Krav, but that’s also the last class I’m skipping for a long time. Now I’m focusing on getting ready for civilian instructor certification level 1 (CIC1) in April, so I can’t afford to slack off. I’ll be moving into a more active teaching role in my own little Krav school (I feel like a Krav TA) before I head off.

I did go to yoga on Tuesday, and I made it back to Krav on Wednesday. The calf is still sore, but moving around and stretching helps.

Thursday was a rest day, and Friday I (finally) made it to UWF fencing practice. We had a special guest for that practice – Prissy got some teaching experience by warming us up with some yoga. I focused primarily on rapier during that practice, but the room was busy with rapier, dussack, and ringen.

Yesterday I went to the beach, took a walk, and did some sun salutations. The jellies were out, so I elected not to swim. Nik and I took a Poke-walk on the beach after lunch.

Today, SCA fencing practice is cancelled. We lost one of our own last week, so all local SCA activities are cancelled, and we’re spending time with our loved ones.

I believe that’s all I’ve been up to this week. Looking forward, In addition to getting ready for CIC1, I have a big fencing event coming up in November, and I want to participate in as many tournaments as possible, so I need to tune up my dussack and long sword skills. November is a big month for me in general. I have somewhere to be (involving fencing) every single weekend that month. I’m excited, but I also expect to be exhausted.

I’m hoping that some of the adjustments I’m making to my diet and fitness levels for CIC1 will help me make it through that month. I’ve installed MyFitnessPal on my new phone, and I’m keeping track of what I’m putting in (again – I use this app in phases). I’m considering getting a fitness tracking device, but I’m not entirely sure which one I want. They’re pricey, so I want to make sure I get the right one!

I think that’s it for now. I’ll try to update more consistently. I really hate these weekly walls o’ text, but my schedule has been hectic. Thanks for bearing with me.

UWF Fencing practice was cancelled on Friday, and I spent Thursday resting up. I was still kind of recovering from the migraine I had after the test Wednesday night. After two days of rest, I finally made it to the beach, but the weather was lousy, so I didn’t make my walk to the pier and back. I did splash around in the surf a bit.

Fortunately my weekend wasn’t entirely inactive. I went to the gym with Nik on Saturday, and he helped me with some weight lifting. I discovered that I can bench press 95 lbs, which I think is pretty good for a first time (it’s more than half my weight)!

On Sunday I went to SCA fencing, but I didn’t get to do a lot of fighting – instead I mostly talked to new fighters and got some advice on another project. I did get to do a little dussack.

Tonight is my first night back at Krav since the test. I think I might be more nervous now than I was when I actually took the test. I’ll let you all know tonight or tomorrow. I don’t want to keep you in suspense, but I’m about to burst if I don’t find out!

My P2 test is next Wednesday! Last Monday and Wednesday, we went over the material in P2 without much review. I’m feeling pretty good about the test. I have one more practice (tomorrow), and then we’ll test on Wednesday.

On Friday and Saturday I went to the beach. I did my usual routine of touching the pier and beach yoga. This time I brought my snorkel gear with me and looked at the fish under water. I spent more time in the water, but I don’t think I did much swimming – I mostly just float when I’m snorkeling.

Today Nik and I brought the dussacks to SCA fencing practice. It’s super hot (heat index over 100 degrees), so we wanted some options for practice that don’t involve getting all armored up. Dussacks count as arts & sciences, and they’re leather, not steel, so we didn’t need to wear all the layers. We also brought the plastic foils for youth – the blade mechanics aren’t much, but you can still do timing and distance. I’m hopeful that we can have more days at the park without necessarily frying our butts off.

SERFO 2015

Okay, where do I even start?

Nik and I got to Atlanta Friday night and had dinner with friends who were also going to participate in the tournament. Four of our students came up as well, but we left them to their own devices.

Saturday

We were up bright and early on Saturday to check in by 9. The Franco-Belgian Tournament was a good warm-up. I won a couple of fights but didn’t make it to finals or anything like that. It knocked the dust off. Nik did make it to finals, and after four and a half minutes of fencing (which doesn’t sound like that much time unless you’re in the ring) took second in the event.

After that, I officiated the Open Longsword Tournament and the Invitational Longsword Tournament (Nik came in fourth place, I believe). I don’t practice much longsword, but every time I go to this event, I remember how artful and powerful it is. I’d like to learn more about it.

After lunch, we had the First Blood Rapier Tournament. The only touches on me in the pools were from my own students. I was super proud of them. I ended up coming in fourth (out of 25 people), a personal best. One of my students came in second, and Nik won first.

I had a fantastic evening hanging out with friends, eating amazing cashew butter cookies, and getting on the HYPE TRAIN with my HEMA friends.

Sunday

The Women’s Longsword Tournament was first thing. That tournament is my goal for next year’s SERFO.

After that, we had the Conventional Rapier Tournament. I didn’t do so well in the pools that time, but I didn’t feel like I choked or did bad fencing. I was simply bested because of the choices I made. One of my students made it to finals, and she and Nik fought for third place that afternoon. He took third, and she took fourth.

After lunch (before all the finals for the day, of course), I had the opportunity to participate in the dussack tournament. I’ve never done dussack before, but I have done some sabre and some backsword, so I signed up and crammed during the lunch hour. I won one fight out of my pools and was generally knocked around, but I LOVED it. Nik and I are looking into getting some dussacks ourselves. None of my people made it to finals, but Nik and one of our students did participate in the elimination round.

I also had the chance to fence some pick-ups with some awesome fencers, and I saw my students doing the same. I received compliments on my progress and also on my students’ skill, sportsmanship, and comportment. I’m so proud of them, and I’m thrilled to see some progress in myself after a plateau.

Nik and I got in from Atlanta around midnight. We’ve turned into the Professor and Mr. Burns, respectively. Despite general soreness from fighting and stiffness from being in the car, I’m going to try to stick it out and go to Krav tonight.

I think I’ve written everything out here, but please let me know if you have questions about the event as a whole or any of the tournaments.
